It is becoming increasingly important for manufacturing companies to replace cleaning products containing hazardous substances – the Hazardous Substances Regulation requires them to check regularly whether less hazardous alternatives are available. Many cleaning products used on a daily basis feature hazard pictograms such as a flame, an exclamation mark or a skull and crossbones.
Such cleaning agents require protective equipment, training and special storage conditions: well-ventilated storage areas, separate storage of acids and alkalis, and, in the case of larger quantities, additional requirements regarding fire safety and the containment of fire-fighting water. Furthermore, some solvents can be harmful to health following long-term exposure – a well-known example is ‘painters’ disease’.
