Offshore & Shipbuilding · a product division of Eco-Nova
Salt-free steel surfaces prior to coating
The Power Eco Metal-Salt Remover removes chloride and sulphate crystals from corroded steel – for offshore platforms, wind turbines, ships in dry dock and shipyard components. Manufactured in Schüttorf, supplied in the form your project requires.
- Not classified as hazardous according to the safety data sheet
- Not classified as dangerous goods under ADR
- Water-based, not a flammable liquid
- Containers ranging from 10 to 1,000 litres
Salt that you can’t see dissolves the coating you’ve paid for. Chlorides and sulphates in the rust marks attract moisture when new paint is applied. Water alone often does not remove them completely.
The product
Power Eco Metal Salt Remover
A water-based salt remover for preparing steel prior to coating. We supply it in the form that best suits your project’s application, logistics and timeframe:
1
Ready to use
Spray directly, without mixing – if no water treatment facilities are available on site.
2
As a concentrate
To be diluted on site with distilled or fully demineralised water – cost-effective for large areas.
3
Tailored to your project
We tailor the concentration and formulation to the application, time frame and logistics.
Areas of application
Where the Salt Remover is used
Offshore platforms
Jackets, support legs, handrails and lifting equipment
Jack-up legs
Regularly driven out of the water, high salt exposure
Offshore wind power
Transition Pieces, Platforms and Internal Structures
Ships in the dock
Hull, superstructure and ballast tanks
Port & Shipyard
Steel components onshore prior to coating
Refurbishment
Renewal of existing coatings where salt exposure has been confirmed
Procedure
Salt remover and sandblasting – when to use which?
Both methods have their uses and are often combined. It is usually the corrosion protection consultant who determines which method to use.
| Salt Remover | Beams | |
|---|---|---|
| Task | Removes water-soluble salts (chlorides, sulphates) from rust marks | Removes rust and old coatings and creates a surface texture |
| Typical application | After blasting, if the residual salt content is too high; interim cleaning before painting | Mechanical preparation from scratch |
| Equipment | Spray lance or low-pressure sprayer, high-pressure cleaner, deionised water | Blasting plant, blasting media, waste disposal |
| Waste | Rinsing water – collection and disposal | Abrasives and blasting residue |
| Evidence | Bresle test: before and after (ISO 8502-6/-9) | Degree of surface preparation (ISO 8501-1), roughness, residual salt |
Evidence
Measuring success: the Bresle test – before and after
Only a measurement can tell you whether a surface is clean enough. First, apply the Salt Remover to a test area and measure the residual salt content before and after – together with your assessor. We will provide you with a test sample for this purpose.
From real-life experience: When coating monopiles for an offshore wind farm, the required residual salt content of 20 mg/m² NaCl was not achieved, despite high-pressure washing with distilled water. On the inspector’s recommendation, the Salt Remover was used – with positive feedback from the production team.
Procedure
Eight steps to a salt-free surface
1
Measuring salinity
Determine the baseline value using the Bresle test.
2
Pre-cleaning
Remove grease, oil and loose rust.
3
Einhausen
Enclose the component and ensure that all the rinse water is collected.
4
Spray on
Using a spray lance, a low-pressure sprayer or a foam lance.
5
Leave it to take effect
15 to 30 minutes, depending on how dirty it is.
6
Rinse
Using distilled or fully demineralised water and high pressure.
7
Post-measurement
Repeat the Bresle test; carry out a second round if necessary.
8
Coating
As soon as possible after approval and drying.
Important
Three things that determine success
The Salt Remover is acidic (pH approx. 3) and is only as effective as the water is clean. This is what matters:
1
Use deionised water only
Tap water or domestic water contains chlorides and will distort the result. Use only distilled or fully demineralised water for mixing and rinsing.
2
Collect the rinse water
The wash water is collected in its entirety and disposed of in accordance with regulations. At sea, the operator’s and port’s rules also apply.
3
Check the material
Protect aluminium, galvanised surfaces, seals and plastics, or test them beforehand on a test area.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about salt removal
Why isn’t high-pressure water enough?
Water removes loose salts from the surface. It often fails to reach the crystals within the rust marks completely. It is precisely these residues that later cause blistering and corrosion beneath the coating.
Does the Salt Remover replace sandblasting?
Not necessarily. Blasting is used for mechanical preparation, whilst the salt remover is used to remove any remaining salts. The two methods are often combined. It is usually the surveyor who decides which method to use.
In what form is the Salt Remover supplied?
Ready to use or as a concentrate for dilution on site. We tailor the concentration and formulation to your project. Packaging: 10, 20, 60, 200 and 1,000 litres.
Why is it necessary to use deionised water?
Tap water and service water contain chlorides themselves. This would introduce new salts onto the surface and distort the measurement result.
Can the dishwater be discharged into the sea?
No. The rinse water is collected in its entirety and disposed of in accordance with local regulations. At sea, the operator’s and port’s rules also apply.
