The labels on many cleaning products and chemicals feature a code beginning with \u201eUFI:\u201c. In this article, our dangerous goods officer, Mark Brumme, explains what the code means, for which products it is mandatory, and what you should do in an emergency.<\/p>\n

What is a UFI number?<\/h2>\n

UFI stands for \u201eUnique Formula Identifier\u201c. The code consists of 16 characters divided into four blocks. It links a product to the details of its composition that the manufacturer has reported to the poison control centres. In an emergency, this enables poison control centres to quickly and reliably identify which substances are present and recommend the appropriate course of action.<\/p>\n

For which products is UFI mandatory?<\/h2>\n

The UFI must appear on all mixtures that are classified as hazardous due to their health or physical hazards and are placed on the market in the EU. It is not required for mixtures that are classified solely on the basis of environmental hazards. The UFI may also be included on a voluntary basis on non-classified products. A UFI on the label does not therefore automatically mean that a product is hazardous.<\/p>\n

The legal basis is Article 45 and Annex VIII of the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272\/2008. The UFI therefore applies throughout the EU.<\/p>\n

Since when has this requirement been in force?<\/h2>\n

The requirement was introduced gradually, depending on who the product is sold to:<\/p>\n

products that have already been notified under national law<\/strong><\/td>\nTransition period until 1 January 2025<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n

Since 1 January 2025, this requirement has therefore applied to all classified mixtures. If the composition changes beyond the permitted variations, the product requires a new UFI.<\/p>\n

UFI at Eco-Nova<\/h2>\n

We state the UFI on our labels, even for products that are not classified as hazardous. It is also included in the safety data sheet.<\/p>\n

What should you do in the event of an accident?<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Dial the emergency number or call a poison information centre.<\/li>\n
  2. Have the product name, manufacturer and UFI to hand. The easiest way is to take a photo of the label with your mobile phone.<\/li>\n
  3. Take the photo or the safety data sheet with you when you visit the doctor or go to A&E. The doctor can obtain the necessary information from the Poisons Information Centre using the UFI.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
